TS12 Quilt-Along: 1989 Block #8

Welcome to new block!

I made a very simple polaroid block for this week's addition to the wall hanging. So simple in fact that no additional documents are needed to share the instructions.

Start by cutting your background fabric, I cut mine to 8.5 x 8.5" to give me plenty of wiggle room. Next, cut a white background for your motif - 4.5" by 6.5". Hide your raw edges by ironing the perimeter of the rectangle a quarter inch under on all edges. Repeat steps with the 'photo' background - cut to 3.5" x 3.5".

Place white and photo squares on the background fabric, pin. Use a short straight stitch along the perimeter of each shape.

Use a regular pencil or a chalk marking tool to draw a simple outline of a seagull, an elongated 'm' shape also works to represent a flying bird. Optionally mark "1989" at the bottom of your polaroid frame. Use three threads of embroidery floss and follow your markings with either a back stitch or a stem stitch.

option 2:

Using the sewing machine, you can stitch the outline of the seagulls and the 1989 text. This will be shakey and rough if you don't disengage your feed dogs (like my example below).

Have fun stitching the 1989 block! No matter which you method you choose, this lightly embroidered block brings peaceful beach and/or new york haze to the quilt top! (Use blues for beachy vibes and greys for the city)
